Probably the most memorable of sayings for me is, “an apple a day, keeps the doctor away!” Yeah, there are many others, but apples are so yummy, and so very good for you, I decided I would write about them today. Apples are one of my favorite fruits. They are extremely low in calories, and contain no fat, sodium or cholesterol. They are full of fiber, and they actually taste good. They even contain the so called phytochemicals that may help our bodies fight disease. It is also said that apples can reduce bad cholesterol, reduce your risk of stroke and some types of cancers.
When picking apples you should choose apples with firm skin, no bruises, cuts or gouges. Try to pick the ones with the best color and smell. When storing them, they can absorb other odors in the refrigerator. Once you cut the apple, you can keep it from turning brown by dipping them in one part lemon juice and three parts water.
There are always several apple varieties available in the grocery stores. I have only tried half of the different types of apples there are, and I can tell you that you haven’t tried an apple til you have had a “Pink Lady.”
